Building Your First Ham Radio Station

A first station does not need to be expensive or complicated.
For local operation, a dual-band handheld or mobile radio can get you started. For HF, a 100 watt transceiver and a simple wire antenna can work very well.
Spend time planning the antenna, coax, power supply and grounding. The antenna system often matters more than the radio.
